Templates, spreadsheets and scripts, plus the reasoning that makes them work

Writing index

Five long-form guides on this site, plus five audit write-ups published on dev.to. The guides are the complete method, written so they work in the software you already have: nothing here requires a purchase to be useful.

Five guides here, five audit posts on dev.to

Written for freelancers, creators, students and developers who keep a working document rather than an app.

6 Freelance Contract Clauses That Prevent Late Payments

The six clauses that answer the only four questions that matter when money is late: a deposit before work, a named late fee that is repeated on every invoice, a written right to pause, an out-of-scope list, rights that transfer on payment, and a priced exit. Defaults given for each.

02

How to Build a 90-Day Content Calendar in One Afternoon

Five structural decisions instead of ninety creative ones: four monthly themes, a hook bank in its own tab, three dropdowns per row, one repurposing map, and a 15-minute Friday numbers check. Includes the three failure modes that kill calendars by week two.

03

The Boring Budget Spreadsheet That Actually Survives Month Three

Why budgets die in the third month and what replaces ambition: twelve categories maximum, planned versus actual with a live difference column, and one glanceable what-is-left-over line. Then the same anti-bloat rules applied to a habit grid and a job pipeline.

04

Your Second Brain Doesn't Need Another App. It Needs Four Folders and a 15-Minute Friday

PARA as a filing rule rather than a taxonomy: four folders sorted by actionability, one inbox that gets emptied daily, a project file that is refused until its done-when line is written, and a 15-minute weekly review split 5-5-3-2. Plain markdown, so an app switch is a copy-paste.

05

Week 6 Is When Three Deadlines Land on the Same Day. You Can Spot It in Week 1

Seven steps that cost about ninety minutes in September: every graded item on one sheet with its weight, a days-left column that flags red and amber by itself, a five-day collision scan, study hours set against remaining weight, and a grade average that is labelled honestly as a percentage rather than a GPA.

06

A Chrome new-tab extension you can audit in ten seconds

Published on dev.to. The 16-line manifest, the four values FocusDash keeps in chrome.storage.local, the three greps that confirm nothing leaves the machine, and the two bugs that audit found: a pomodoro timer that drifts and loses your session on reload, and a streak that rolls at UTC midnight instead of yours.

07

What breaks when your paid shell scripts run on macOS bash 3.2

Published on dev.to. Three defects found by auditing my own $4 script pack: a hardcoded 4096 page size that reported 164 GB free on a 24 GB laptop, an empty array that is unbound under bash 3.2 and aborts the run, and a PNG copied to a .tiff name with the script reporting success. Plus a fourth bug of the same class, found in a neighbouring file while writing this up, and the build that fixed it, which is the one buyers download. The repro scripts behind every claim in it are in a public repository, each one runnable on its own.

08

Counting the formulas in my own $5 spreadsheet

Published on dev.to. An .xlsx is a ZIP of XML, so a spreadsheet claim is checkable in ninety seconds with unzip and grep. Doing that to my own Student Planner found 51 formulas, zero SUMPRODUCT calls, a credits column that filters rather than weights, and a weekly total that quietly stops counting at row 200.

09

Batch resize images on a stock Mac: sips writes seven formats and refuses WebP

Published on dev.to. sips probed one format at a time rather than by folklore: seven image formats and a PDF it can write, WebP it can read but cannot produce, and two names that look like aliases and are not. Then the four places my own resize script still breaks, including a --max-width that quietly upscales a 16px icon to 1200px.

10

Nightly backups with rsync hard links: three snapshots cost 1.4 MB where copies would cost 3.5 MB

Published on dev.to. --link-dest measured inode by inode on the copy of rsync macOS actually ships. The honest part is what it does not do: a minute-resolution stamp under which a second run erases the history it just claimed to add, a prune glob that deletes any folder whose name starts with 20, and no check that the backup lives on a different disk.
